The Pittsburgh region’s steep streets and hillsides, unfortunately, are not stationary. In fact, the area has the highest concentration of landslides in the state.
Retaining walls will go up soon along streets in Squirrel Hill and Duquesne Heights for the latest projects in a seemingly never-ending battle against landslide damage. The cost is significant, with just those two projects topping $1 million combined, while other hillside rehabs are far more expensive.
It’s a problem that won’t be solved anytime soon (not with Pittsburgh’s rainy climate), but Allegheny County at least makes it convenient to track landslides and susceptible areas here.
