Ed Gainey made history earlier this month, becoming Pittsburgh’s first Black mayor. As the 61st person to hold the office, he carries on a line that stretches back more than 200 years.
Now a trivia question: Who was first?
Ebenezer Denny, who was elected in 1816 but served just six months because of health problems, is perhaps best known for his journal entries as a lieutenant during the Revolutionary War. His writings from the surrender of the British at Yorktown are frequently cited, as are his Northwest Indian War journals.
He died in 1822 and is buried in Allegheny Cemetery.
