Under the radar: Opioid addiction amongst elderly

America is in the midst of a public health epidemic – in 2016, 2.1 million Americans had an opioid use disorder.

While opioid misuse has grown exponentially across the board, the elderly have been particularly susceptible. Addictions can go under the radar due to older Americans typically having chronic conditions that require medication.

If you think a loved one might have an opioid abuse problem, look out for these warning signs:

• Frequently “losing” prescriptions

• They ask for early refills

• Lack of hygiene

At PA Health & Wellness, we urge medical professionals to practice due diligence and look for these warning signs.
