The year's darkest day is behind us — sort of

Winter is awfully dark here. The start of 2021 seems to be continuing the pattern. And that’s it for politics or COVID-19 (hey, I only have 100 words!).

Consider, instead, the natural order. While the shortest day of winter came Dec. 21, 2020, our little old Earth takes a while to awaken from its wintry slumber. You’re not still sleeping when you wake up and it still seems dark.

The geeks at EarthSky put it this way: the earliest sunrise comes every December; the latest sunrise every January.

That’s our story. What’s yours? Share with us by writing our editor.
