It’s difficult to recognize if someone is contemplating suicide. Frequently, the feeling is internal, rather than conspicuous, but during September’s National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, it is useful to know some of the signs that someone is at risk for suicide or considering the act:
• Pre-existing mental health conditions or history of trauma.
• Changing or unusual characteristics and behaviors, such as rage, fatigue or giving away possessions.
• Discussing hopelessness, unbearable pain or anxiety.
• Isolating and withdrawing from social situations.
Fortunately, there are resources to help, such as MyAdvisor and the 988 Lifeline, which connect people in crisis to support.
