It’s been hard to love my hometown of New York City these days, surrounded by crime and trash. Noise and rodents. A mere three million facing the city’s newest “rat czar(ina).”
But New Yorkers find humor in it all, like the man fully committed to his Halloween costume commemorating the official pizza rat. And amidst the daily travails are stories of triumph, like the high-rise rescue on my street and the firemen who saved a dangling woman, ripped straight from an adventure movie.
When I am flailing, I think of her, this nameless neighbor with superhuman strength, and plow on.
