Engineering solutions for an outbreak

It’s no doubt epidemiologists are the go-to experts as the world tries to contain COVID-19, but that doesn’t mean that engineers are sitting this one out.

Johns Hopkins University’s Center for Systems Science and Engineering offers an important (and addictive) resource: an interactive map showing real-time data on confirmed cases. Computer scientists at Northeastern are using predictive modeling to forecast how the disease might spread, and biomedical engineers at Purdue have developed a portable testing device.

With the outbreak curbing travel and conferences, we sure are grateful to the engineers behind virtual collaboration and videoconferencing tools, like Slack and Zoom.
