Ah November, when Pittsburghers’ thoughts turn to Thanksgiving, turkeys and stuffing (as well they should).
Here’s another reason for November thanks: Pittsburgh earned its name in this month.
The VisitPittsburgh website tells us: “the earliest known reference to … Pittsburgh, is in a letter … from General John Forbes to William Pitt the Elder, 1st Earl of Chatham, dated Nov. 27, 1758. This letter notified Pitt that his name had been given to the place, spelled ‘Pittsbourgh.’ ”
Dang! Even back then they got our name wrong …
