Poet Samuel Hazo, 91, is a lifelong Pittsburgh resident who began writing poetry addressing family, faith and war while stationed in Korea. He went on to teach at Duquesne University for 43 years, earned 12 honorary degrees and was twice honored as Pittsburgh’s Man of the Year in Arts.
Governor Casey named him as Pennsylvania’s poet laureate, a role he held for 10 years. Hazo founded the International Poetry Forum and was director from 1966 to 2009, bringing about 400 poets to Pittsburgh and establishing the city as a literary hub.
In his spare time, he’s authored 45 books…and counting.
