Two national holidays are almost universally celebrated by all Americans: the Fourth of July and Thanksgiving. This week, we celebrate the Fourth, America’s birthday, commemorating the Declaration of Independence.
During the several years my career took us to Washington, D.C., my family celebrated on the U.S. Capitol lawn, serenaded by the National Symphony and dazzled by fireworks. For all the years A Capitol Fourth has been held, no politicians have participated.
This year, President Trump takes center stage, changing the event and location. Without politics, celebrating the Fourth united us. After this year, will that still be true?
