Few professions receive as much criticism as journalism. Congressmen and senators are up there, too, and that fits, since the press is the fourth estate.

But a recent report gave some insight on what reporters feel are their biggest challenges. The role of social networks, staffing and resources, and the conversation over “fake news” ranked highly.

These issues are interconnected. More people are getting their news from social media, hurting traditional outlets’ viability and enabling an unchecked forum for fake news to thrive. It’s a complex problem, but trust starts with an honest dialogue with citizens. Same goes for politicians …
