Why do we call it ‘Black Friday’?

by The 100 Companies

Black Friday is dedicated to the freshest deals of the holiday season. At the stroke of midnight (or earlier, these days), discounts and deals kick off the race to finish your shopping list. So what’s with the dark name “Black Friday”?

The named was popularized in Philadelphia during the 1950s, referring to the 1869 U.S. economic shutdown. After the market crashed, prices were at an all-time low and shoppers took advantage of the discounted prices.

The result? Businesses being back “in the black” after months “in the red.” The name stuck, and now it’s a worldwide day of shopping.
