The “Christmas Pickle”, as it’s commonly known, is an ornament hung within the branches of a Christmas tree and has a big role to play the morning of Dec. 25.
Beginning as a way to keep children from rushing to open their presents, the tradition says the first to find the pickle ornament gets to open their gift(s) first, letting the other kids (and parents) have a moment to appreciate the holiday before the wrapping paper-ripping resumes.
Other than first dibs at gifts, the pickle-finder is also said to be granted good luck for the next year (high stakes this year).
