Memorial Day, as most schoolchildren know, is the “official” start of summer (can you say, “Kennywood is open?”).
The holiday has much deeper meaning in western Pennsylvania, historically an overachiever in terms of the number of residents who are veterans – and those who have died for our freedom.
Given this history, consider devoting part of your weekend to the real reason for the holiday. Here are a few suggestions:
• Fold the flag at Heinz History Center.
• Visit the nationally recognized Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall and Museum.
• Attend services at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, one of our nation’s newest.
