On March 25, the Union Project will partner with Wigle Whiskey for a workshop celebrating our city’s love of the spirit.

Pittsburgh played a critical role in the Whiskey Rebellion. With America in debt after the Revolutionary War, Congress began taxing distilled spirits. Western Pennsylvanians reacted so hostilely that President George Washington sent nearly 13,000 militia members to stop the rebellion.

At one time, western Pennsylvania had 4,000 distilleries. By Prohibition, it was down to 1,300 and by 2008, just three remained. A 2011 state law resulted in a rebirth, with two dozen distilleries in the region.
