What to include in your company’s social media policy

According to a recent Pew Research Center survey, most employers already have social media policies in place. However, in a world where the internet evolves daily, reviewing this policy each year is the best way to ward against potential liabilities.

Consider the following:

• Identification: Require employees to identify their company affiliation when communicating about the organization.

• Freedom of speech: Include a savings clause, which confirms for employees that the policy can’t restrict their rights under the National Labor Relations Act.

• HR: Postings should be consistent with HR’s discrimination and harassment policies.

• Discipline: Clearly communicate the consequences of violating the policy.
